Abstract

At the end of XVIII century, the illustrated politic of the portuguese Crown counted on publications to promote the technical enhancement of colonial agriculture. The books that form the agricultural manual O Fazendeiro do Brasil (The Farmer of Brazil) (1798-1806) are introduced by prefaces which function was to present the subjects approached in each volume. Written by Friar José Mariano da Conceição Veloso (1742-1811), some of these texts present discussions related to the intellectual domains of the political economy in that time, highlighting issues such as the origin of wealth in society and the role of the state in the governance of economic life. This article aims to point out the instrumental use of a certain economic vocabulary the franciscan uses to justify the publication of the books.
