Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the changes in oil unionism during the political-economic crisis that began in 2013, with reference to oil workers represented by the Unique Federation of Oil Workers (FUP). We argue that in unstable circumstances union organizations tend to accentuate the confrontation with government and business policies, however, the content of the strategies varies according to the contextual challenges, the organizational capacity of the unions and their political affiliation. Thus, compared to the 1980s and 1990s, in the current conjuncture, marked by the crisis in Petrobras and by state policies of deregulation of the labor market, the oil union leaders bet more on dialogue than on the conflict approaching a trade union practice purposeful type.
