A Brief History of Soviet Biology Under Lysenkoism

Between 1931 and 1964, the USSR experienced the consequences of a pseudoscience, Lysenkoism, a charlatanical view of Biology that sought to protect itself from discredit and impose its power in academia and politics through the fusion of pseudoscience and ideology. In addition to a bibliographic review, the writings of Trofím Lysenko and the “Michurinists” were analyzed by a historian and an agronomist, through the sociocultural history of Science, which provides a new perspective on the group. Cases already reported in the past by geneticists inside and outside the Soviet Union, by the Soviet press and by historians now receive the addition of the inconsistencies and incongruities of Lysenko’s own articles, which points to deception rather than sincere belief in research.
