Abstract

The 1955 Plínio Salgado's candidacy to the post of President of the Brazilian Republic came up a huge debate in which different ways of using the memory played a key role. The Popular Representation Party led by Mr. Salgado, presented itself as integralist and therefore it was trying to get its meaning and substance from the past, since it was precisely in the past that the PRP was a mass party and with expectation of coming to power. However, this same past carried some negative senses to both the integralism and Mr. Salgado's candidacy. Fascist, cup supportive and laughable were part of the adjectives used to describe the integralist in the late 1930's and the 1940's. In 1955 the enemies of Mr. Salgado's candidacy brought these adjectives back to the political stage. In the vote dispute, mastering the memory became a key point.
