Abstract

Review of the book Carnaval em Branco e Negro: Carnaval Popular Paulistano: 1914-1988, written by Olga Rodrigues de Moraes von Simson, anthropologist and professor at Universidade Estadual de Campinas. The author aims to analyse the urban society of the city of São Paulo through carnival party activities in the last two centuries. She tries to comprehend the cultural transformation of this life aspect, characteristic of urban leisure.
