Abstract

Based on notary files, as inventories, wills and deeds of sale, we have detected the most important lending and borrowing transactions performed by the people who lived in the captaincy of Minas Gerais during the eighteenth century. Besides, we have tried to comprehend how that kinds of transactions, that we have labeled as “credit practices”, works. That article aims to understand the meanings of several economic strategies practiced by the people in their daily life; and to realize how important these kinds of dealings were for the market development in Portuguese America, especially in Minas Gerais/Brazil.
