Abstract

This article aims to understand the role of memory in the collective constitution of religious female groups, especially Umbandistas and Catholics. The scenario where the facts progress is the city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, in southern Brazil. The study focuses primarily on memory capabilities substantiated by oral history – in how these contribute to underlie subjects’ and groups’ strategies, demonstrating identities and highlighting crucial aspects and moments of ones’ personal and collective history, with special emphasis on the consolidation of historical spaces and social recognition that result from these processes.
