Abstract

During the Brazilian military regime, a human rights organization, Amnesty International, worked onthe behalf of political prisoners and for publishing human rights abuses charges among the internationalcommunity. As part of a larger research project, which aims to investigate the work of AmnestyInternational in Brazil, this article aims to analyze Amnesty’s approach to torture charges perpetrated byagents of the Brazilian military regime. The article intends to show relevant aspects concerning theorigins and history of Amnesty International in order to understand two of its main principles: theprinciple of nonviolence and the emphasis placed on individuals.

Author Biography

  • Renata Meirelles, Universidade de São Paulo

    PhD candidate in Social History at Universidade de São Paulo. The author worked as researcher in the project "Files of repression and resistence: mapping and analisys of the funds DEOPS/SP and DEIP/SP", at Arquivo do Estado de São Paulo. Researcher at International Research Group State Crime Initiative (ISCI), at King's College London. Her PhD research is entitled "Light the candles on: the International Amnesty and the Brazil (1961-1982)", sponsored by FAPESP fellowship program. renatameirelles@usp.br
