Abstract

The Secretary of State for Overseas Domains played an important role in the administration of the Portuguese Empire in the course of the eighteenth century, mainly by sending orders and instructions to the Overseas Council and to the agents of the colonial administration. This paper aims to discuss the origins and ways of acting of this department along the reign of D. João V, with special emphasis on its internal organization (its officers and hierarchies) and the limits placed to the expedients of its secretary, Antônio Guedes Pereira
