Secular and religious perspectives in women's press in Iran

This article analyzes how the notions of modernity and secularity impacted the women's movement in Iran before and after the 1979 Revolution, focusing on discussions of sexual freedom and gender equality in women's press. The selected magazines were Dānish (Knowledge), Zan-e Ruz (Today's Women), Payam-e Zan (Women's Message), Payam-e Hajar (Hagar's Message), and Zanan (Women), published between the early 20th century and the early 21st century. In conclusion, I propose a discussion on how secularity and religiosity are not opposing elements but mutually constitutive in local activism.
