In this essay, I intend to briefly present Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten's aesthetic project. First of all, I will look at the way in which Baumgarten's aesthetics was received in the classical and more recent aesthetic historiography. I will then explore the problem of beauty in the way it was discussed in his three main works dealing with this issue: Reflections on Poetry (1735); Metaphysics (1739) and Aesthetics (2 voll., 1750-1758). In particular, I will focus on the difference between the phenomenal conception of beauty in his Metaphysics and the presentation of the theme in the Aesthetics. At the end of the paper, I will investigate the problem of aesthetic inspiration as the inbreath of a presence external to the self, so as to emphasize the link between aesthetics and otherness.
