Abstract

Initially, the autho describes the various functions performed by the hospital for the benefit of the community; he analyzes the medical assistance function, physical, social and professional rehabilitation, the functions related to teaching and training of technical personnel, and the research and sanitary aspects of education. The hospital has to be conveniently structured in order to perform all these functions. Therefore, there is an administrative sector, which corresponds to an Administrative Council in the private hospitals and to an Administrative Board in the "Santas Casas" a kind of community hospital that is typical of the Brazilian case. To perform its tasks, the hospital's top management uses staff teams that can be either permanent or transitory. The operational sectors of the hospital are grouped together in three main divisions: medical, technical and administrative. The medical department (or division) performs all the hospital end-activities, while the support activities are under the responsibility of the technical department. The administrative department is responsible for the essential bureaucratic activities related to the operation of the hospital as a whole. The permanent expansion of the hospital structure and its operational complexity has required the participation of a specially trained individual — the hospital manager. Therefore, in all countries there is an important effort, particularly in the universities, in the development of courses and other activities designed to prepare this specialized individual for hospital management and to update his (her) knowledge.
