Abstract

The representation of basketball teaching in the school context: case studies in physical education preservice instruction The purpose of the present research was to describe the teaching of basketball in the context of supervised practice of Physical Education college students. The research adopted an interpretive and a descriptive approach composed of multiple case studies. Data were obtained from systematic observations of three student’s classes, analysis of the respective lesson plans, and formal, semi-structured interviews. Results showed that two students adopted a molecular approach, and dedicated a major portion of their class time to teaching game skills. The learning tasks employed were almost directed to the development of isolated and combined individual offensive skills. Most of the time, skills progressions, do not include any form of opposition. The third student implemented an approach oriented towards the understanding of the game , and the majority of his classes were focused on individual, and group tactics. Despite the similarities observed in the instructional procedures and content coverage, different personal purposes for teaching basketball in schools were identified, which seems directly related to personal experiences in sport practices.
