Professional sport management has been a theme of studies in Brazil, involving researches concerning the manager and his performance in different segments of the sports industry (Pitts & Stotlar, 2002). Several studies have been developed, to characterize the administrator of clubs, federations and sports administration entities (Bastos, 2003, 2004; Medalha,1982) and to describe the organizational and managerial characteristics of brazilian volleyball teams (Durieux, 2005; Pizzolato, 2004). This survey, descriptive and exploratory, had the main objective of describing the manager profile and the organizational characteristics of brazilian volleyball teams, participants of the "2007-2008 Volleyball Superleague Championship", through multiple case studies. For this, the team managers answered a questionnaire. The main findings were that the teams have professional managers, performing managerial strategic functions. Furthermore, the organizational structure of the high level brazilian volleyball teams is characterized by being strongly based on the social sports clubs model, sponsored mainly by the private sector and supported by the municipal governmentsDownloads
