Sedentary behavior has become common among the youth and adolescent population. Different authors suggest that the school, more specifically Physical Education at school, should assume the task of developing practices that emphasize the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle. The aim of the present study was to investigate the motivation for practicing school sports by students aged 11 to 15 years of elementary school. The sample consisted of 118 students, of both sexes, regularly enrolled in elementary school. Motivation was analyzed using the Participation Motivation Questionnaire (PMQ). It was observed that students are motivated to practice basketball, handball, futsal, and volleyball to develop physical fitness, improve technical capacity, have good competitive results and, in swimming, as a means of socializing through group activities. We hope that these factors that influence motivation to practice sports can assist in motivation to raise the level of physical activity.
