Abstract

In the Officer Training Course at the Air Force Academy (AFA), physical education is mandatory for all students, regardless the grade and specialty. Several studies have been analyzing the incidence of sedentarism and weight gain in military personnel, which can compromise the health and operability. However, although there are studies which deal with the importance of good physical conditioning, the ones that analyze the motivation of these professionals for regular physical exercise or sports are still rare. Thus, this study has analyzed the motivation to practice exercise/sports. The study population consisted of five officers, from the rank of lieutenant, who have attended the Officer Training Course at AFA. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the Thematic Analysis method. Favorable aspects to motivation were observed, such as identification with the group and sport modality; the concern with health, well-being and professional performance; the acquisition and knowledge acquired in training course; and the use of physical exercise in military instruction. On the other hand, we observe as negative aspects: a compulsory and repetitive practice; the overload of academic routine; as well as the differentiation between athletes and non-athletes. In addition, after the training course, there are reports that the Officials reduce or even interrupt the practice of sports and exercises, due to the prioritization of administrative activities, lack of demand and encouragement from hierarchical superiors, which can harm the health, quality of life and operability.
