Professional athletes tend to train during adolescence, at this stage of life, sleep has its particularities and factors such as biological maturation and times of social engagements are associated with the quality of sleep in adolescents. Quality sleep is related to high performance and resistance to injuries in the practice of sports. Thus, it is pertinent to try to understand the sleep of the adolescent athlete. The aim of the present study was to assess the sleep pattern and compare objective and subjective sleep measures in young soccer players. Sixty-two high-performance athletes from youth categories, SUB17 and SUB20, from two football clubs in the state of São Paulo, participated in the study. To collect sleep data, the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ) and actigraphy were used. Discrepancies were found between objective and subjective measures of sleep, in general, athletes underestimate their hours and duration of sleep and present a lot of social jetlag, which is an index of disruption of biological rhythms. The observation of our data indicates that young athletes do not have adequate sleep quality, are subject to disruption of circadian rhythms and have poor self-observation of these aspects of their body's functioning. Thus, we can conclude that taking measures to optimize training that include educational aspects of sleep has the potential to improve performance and prevent injuries throughout the career of young athletes. A clear measure that emerges from the present study is that delaying the start of training would allow athletes to increase their sleep duration.
