Evaluation of body composition and food intake of swimmers with disabilities

Abstract

This study had the purpose to evaluate the body composition and dietary intake of disabled swimmers in a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo. Ten individuals participated in the study, five of each sex, who trained at a university gymnasium and agreed to take part in the survey by taking part in an interview about their eating habits. An anthropometric assessment (weight and height) was performed, body composition (skin folds) and food intake (three 24-hour recalls) that was calculated by the Diet Pro 5i software. Regarding body composition, body mass index and mean fat percentage was 24,84 ± 5,10 kg/m² and 17,8 ± 5,76 % for men, 28,1 ± 4,32 kg/m² and 26,75 ± 6,08 % for women. Regarding food intake, the caloric value and the calcium and iron minerals were below the daily recommendations, while vitamin C and sodium presented adequate values. The food and nutritional characterization of this population is of great importance, as it enables better understanding of your needs and assists the development of nutritional interventions with the purpose of improving the quality of life and sports performance.
