Abstract

Judging plays a very important role in sports and its formation process should be increasingly taken into account by different institutions. This could lead to more accurate and fair results, more aware and motivated athletes (from beginners to top performers), judges who are more satisfied with their work and a greater appreciation of sport as a socio-cultural and value-forming phenomenon. The aim of this study was to analyze the levels of understanding and application of practical skills among Women’s (WAG) and Men’s (MAG) artistic gymnastics judges. This is a descriptive, quantitative study - which used descriptive statistics to numerically represent the participants' answers, as well as analyzing and discussing the data according to the theoretical framework and the authors' views on the subject. The research tool used was a questionnaire applied to a sample of 58 judges (28 WAG and 30 MAG). Based on a data analysis using descriptive statistics, it was found that judges in both disciplines understand and apply these skills in similar ways, with emphasis on self-confidence and the ability to assess series of different levels. The understanding and application of skills related to the artistic component of the women's sport is still a difficult item for WAG judges, while skills related to efficient communication and emotional perception are the main differences for MAG judges. This study is important for identifying the weaknesses and potential of the group of Brazilian judges in question and thus better collaborate with their formation process for judging in national and international championships.
