Abstract

This paper proposes a discussion about the São Paulo population list produced in 1729, for the recovery of “Donativo Real”, as possible source to study the colonial slavery in the region concerning the city of São Paulo and its term. Without escaping the guiding subject of our analysis – the process of replacing Indian slavery labor with African – we’ll, first, point the work perspectives offered by this documental source and, then, propose an interpretation that considers not only the information entered in its pages, but also the silences and the omissions produced by its authors.
