Insurgent Territorialities of the Awaken Giant: 2013 Brazilian June Journeys and its Territorial Dynamics

Abstract

In 2013, protests by the Free Pass Movement against the increase in the public transportation fare in the city of São Paulo became the trigger for the outbreak of systemic manifestations in all Brazilian states, the Federal District and cities abroad. Voices were polysemic and voiced by social demands such as transportation, health, education, as well as protests against corruption. Demonstrations with an expanded scope spread throughout the national territory regrouped by the autonomy of communication through social networks, making the month of June an insurgency odyssey: June Journeys. The objective was to analyze the territorial dynamics of these manifestations. The research is based on documentary analysis of news content and online social networks to reflect on the contexts of acts such as its diffusion through the country, the participation of each state, the conjuncture of its territoriality, multiscalarity, its networks and online activism, line. The mobilization of June 2013 included the formation of insurgency territorialities, strengthened by the autonomous communication provided by social networks, disseminating their messages and integrating the feelings of insurgency. The movement appropriating the space by the taking of the streets, developed a reticulated mobilization that found resonance in all the places where the acts concentrated of multiscale way. The enjoyment of digital communication as clothing has made cyberspace a new medium with which socio-spatial experiences can be triggered, as in the activism awakened in the June Journeys.
