The spatialization of natural and anthropic physical information in hydrographic basins provides a systemic understanding of the unit and the development of planning strategies in the face of erosive processes. Therefore, the objective of this research is to propose a method of mapping the vulnerability to erosion for the Santa Maria River Basin (BHRSM), located in southwestern Rio Grande do Sul. The study area was chosen because it presents the development of erosive features documented by other authors. The methodology involved assigning weights to the data variables of geology, soils, land use, rainfall erosivity and Geomorphons elements and subsequent crossing in a GIS environment. The model demonstrated that the BHRSM has a natural vulnerability to erosion due to the presence of friable sedimentary rocks. However, overgrazing in the portion occupied by cattle has increased soil degradation and fostered sediment transport. In addition, the introduction of soybeans provides soil exposure at certain times of the year, causing erosion. The model indicated, in an unprecedented way, the association of the portions with the highest presence of erosive features to the highest average annual rainfall erosivity in the BHRSM. The model also had the advantage of the possibility of changing the vulnerability class due to the variation in erosivity and land use, data that show annual changes in the BHRSM. Bearing in mind the situation of vulnerability to erosion, it is necessary to develop management strategies, especially for grassland formation and temporary crops, in order to minimize the damage caused by erosion.
