Abstract

Considering the wide occurrence of mangroves in hypersaline estuaries of the semi-arid coast of Brazil, there is a demand for studies that indicate how this ecosystem has been distributed in fluviomarine landscapes. This research sought to analyze the spatial fragmentation of the mangrove forests that occurs in the estuarine zone of the Piranhas-Açu River (RN), from three steps were carried out: 1) Bibliographic survey of national and international documents to support the work; 2) Mapping of mangrove vegetation in the years 2008 and 2021; and 3) Application of area, shape, and proximity landscape metrics, using the Geographic Information System. In terms of results, these indicated a reduction of 329.8 hectares of mangrove forest and an increase of 230 contiguous patches of these forests, in little more than a decade. The canopies with an area of fewer than 20 hectares represented more than 88% of the occupation in both years. This value reverberated in the response of the shape parameters, which indicated that more than 50% of them were irregular, presenting an important influence on the relationship between the perimeter and the area. With the formation of adjacent groves, the nearest neighbor metric reported that the euclidean distance of fewer than 30 m represented more than 75% of the spatial patterns. Therefore, the loss of mangrove occupation and it’s fragmentation may progress shortly, if actions to monitor this process are not carried out, as well as the recovery of areas that are degraded.
