Access to justice and health are highly violated fundamental rights in Colombia. The objective of this paper was to explore and describe the relationship between legal needs, well-being and social defeat by evaluating 412 students and employees of a Colombian university through an online questionnaire. It was found that half of the participants are aware of where to find free legal assistance, of their fundamental rights, have little confidence in the justice system, considering it slow and expensive, and that judicial officials are corrupt. However, they have a favorable opinion about the protection actions. There is a relationship between trust in the justice system and social integration, contribution, and social defeat. Of the dimensions of social welfare, updating is associated with all legal variables. Negative correlations were also found between knowledge of rights and free legal assistance with confidence, opinion, agility and costs of access to justice, and between confidence and agility of justice, with negative perception of judicial officials and social defeat. Understanding how the mechanisms that mediate the impact of social inequality on health operate can contribute to the development of evidence-based preventive and intervention strategies that takes into consideration the social aspects in their approaches – aspects recognized but still poorly integrated in public health policies in the country.
