This article examines the reasons why parents in Quebec and in Brazil become involved in their children"s homework from 4th to 6th grade. The authors aim to verify the predictive value of each of the reasons that motivate parents to become involved in function of Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler (1995, 1997)'s model of parental involvement, that is, their understanding of their parental role, their self-efficacy and their perceptions of invitations to participate on the part of the teachers. The samples consist of 250 Quebec parents and 71 Brazil parents. Whatever family characteristics, Quebec parents are involved especially if they understand that their participation is part of their responsibilities while parents in Brazil participate depending mainly on their self-efficacy. The results are discussed taking into account the peculiarities of the two contexts of the study.Downloads
