Abstract

Illiteracy is probably the major social problem in Brazil insofar as it underlies all the other ones. In the first part of this paper a synchronic analysis of the problem is presented based on official statistics put forward in the Map of Illiteracy. In the second part we look for the social historical roots of the problem in the Brazilian history, since the 16th Century. Both analyses are sociolinguistically oriented.
