This paper presents the movement of institutionalization of Brazilian photography that took place between the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, simultaneously with similar actions in other Latin American countries. Those processes are profoundly linked to the first two Latin American Photography Colloquia held in 1978 and 1981 in Mexico City. These Colloquia made it possible to create bridges between Brazilian and Latin American photographers and photographic institutions. They also made it possible for European and North American institutional experiences in photography to be brought to Latin America, at the same time that they helped to disseminate in Europe the version of Latin American photography established at these Colloquia.
