Gilberto Freyre and the hybridism of Iberian Society

Abstract

This article discusses how the reading of Spanish authors Ángel Ganivet, Miguel de Unamuno and José Ortega y Gasset was fundamental for the development of the themes “regionalismo”, “traditionalism” and “formation of the people” in the work of Gilberto Freyre. We argue that in addition to the central themes of reflection, the method that anchors the approach of Hispanic writers is claimed by the Pernambuco’s author, characterizing his narrative. The text also argues that the combination of these elements makes it possible to consider the Iberian Peninsula and Brazil as societies characterized by both Eastern and Western features. It also seeks to present this hybrid profile not as a dualist vision, but composing an articulated definition, pointing out the interpretation of the group of authors analyzed not marked by regionalism, but of a totalizing character.
