Abstract

Recent research has demonstrated the role of the endocannabinoid system in the regulation of emotions. These findings are in agreement with the fact that changes in mood and anxiety caused by marijuana consumption constitute important reasons for its recreational use. The research in humans and experimental animals, however, has demonstrated that the activation of cannabinoid receptors may cause bidirectional effects in emotional states. The present review, based on papers published until January 2013, summarizes the latest research regarding the role of the endocannabinoid system in mood and anxiety and the perspectives of pharmacological modulation of the system for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
