Thatcherismo e cidadania: Razões para o surgimento do conceito de active citizenship, no final dos anos 1980

O presente artigo examina o surgimento do discurso conservador de active citizenship na administração da primeira-ministra britânica, Margaret Thatcher, no final da década de 1980. A análise investiga as razões de curto prazo que levaram à fabricação deste discurso, o qual emergiria como resposta a um clima de crescente disputa ideológica – consequência de visões distintas sobre a relação entre indivíduo e Estado e seus respectivos papéis, atribuições e deveres – e contestação popular, que alcançariam seu auge com as reformas no Welfare State britânico, na terceira administração Thatcher. Portanto, argumenta-se que o discurso de active citizenship não seria uma consequência direta dos graves problemas sociais britânicos, mas antes uma resposta ao acirramento ideológico do final da década, que chegaria ao seu clímax pela junção de diferentes e emergentes fatores contemporâneos.
