Abstract

The Cuban writer, and political militant, Alejo Carpentier also attempted to establish a common past to the Caribbean. Preoccupied with understanding and explaining the foundations of a regional culture, Carpentier gathered various documents to proceed to an interpretation of the people's daily lives. The preoccupation in assimilating "the other" led him to consider the black slave culture as the essence of the general universe of the Caribbean.
