Abstract

This article aims to analyze the main elements of the American Christian Right’s thought in the late 1970s and early 1980s. To this end, two important books written by two of the Moral Majority’s main leaders were investigated: Listen, America: the conservative blueprint for America´s moral rebirth (1980), by Jerry Falwell, and The Battle for the Mind: a subtle warfare (1980), by Tim LaHaye. Taking into account the trajectory of authors and the context of publication and circulation of their works, we try to demonstrate how an articulation between fundamentalist interpretations of biblical texts, conservative political conceptions and a moral perspective of America’s history structured a political agenda and practical actions of conservative religious groups in public space, inaugurating a pragmatic alliance with the Republican party that remains today.
