Abstract

The present essay discusses aspects of the state of São Paulo historiography on colonial times based on the innovative writings of Sergio Buarque de Holanda. The author analyses his style and method and his influence on the historiography of the economy and population of the state of São Paulo. The article also deals with colonial mentality as introduced in Visão do Paraíso and other studies of the same historian.
