Abstract

The Portuguese immigration to Brazil at the end of the XIXth Century was a consequence of this period's political and economical transition. The contigent "remittance" system was a resource used to satisfy double interests. One hand, it aliviated the tension caused by groups that wanted to leave Portugal; on the other hand, it facilitated internal stability. Under these circunstances, Brazil stuck out as the ideal place for immigration. Brazil being a rich country, in development and having Portuguese traditions, institutions, and language motivated those interested.
