Abstract

João Capistrano de Abreu (1853-1927) often is treated by historians as a scholar whose great knowledge did not result in an equally great number of publications. However, in analyzing this intellectual's abundant correspondence, we find that Capistrano de Abreu did not conform to the procedures of historical research and writing commonly practiced in Brazil during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His use of private correspondence, which was comparable in volume to his published work, suggests that perhaps this intellectual was more at ease in sharing his vast knowledge through private rather than public channels.
