Ragtime is a musical genre that emerged in the US around 1890 and had its decline around 1910. It had strong influences of African music and American genres such as Minstrel Shows, Coon Songs, Cakewalks, among others. It served as a source of inspiration to other genres that gained prominence in the future, such as Jazz and Blues. This article presents a brief history of Ragtime, its main characteristics and major composers.
