"A healthy decisionism": Otto Hintze's answer to the crisis of historicism

This article aims shedding light on the theoretical contributions of the historian Otto Hintze to the critical intellectual context experienced by German historical science in the late nineteenth and in the first half of the twentieth century. In order to do that, I proceed from the assumption that Hintze's positions were largely constituted as an attempt of bringing an answer to the crisis of historicism, which I understand as a collapse of trust - previously sustained by the German literate bourgeoisie - in the "collective singular" sense acquired by the concept of history in modern times. From that previous definition on, I try to understand his individual ethics - defined by Hintze as a "healthy" type of decisionism - as a position derived from what I claim to have been his two main theoretical contributions developed in order to overcome that crisis: the desacralization of the politics of the modern state and his scientific reconceptualization of historicism.
