Abstract

In the 20th century, we can identify some proposals of how to use history to speculate about the future. One of them was elaborated by Herman Kahn, US American physicist, military strategist and futurist, who approached the future during the majority of his career, started in 1947. Herman Kahn’s main concept to speculate about the future was the “heuristic metaphor”. Through it, Kahn defended a method of comparation and approximation of past events to think future developments. In 2002, an article, by David J. Staley, brought back some aspects of Kahn’s heuristic metaphor proposal and idea. Staley also defended historians as one of the most indicated professional to deal with the future.
