Abstract

The subject of freedom was the fundamental topic of the Franciscan William of Ockham’s (1285-1347) entire written production. During his career at the University of Oxford, he devoted himself to logic, emphasizing the theory of propositions, and became involved in the Question of Universals, positioning himself favorably to the nominalists, for whom the particular precedes the universal. Exiled at the court of Louis of Bavaria in Munich since 1328, he began a production focused on the theme of power, in close association with the Franciscan doctrine of poverty. Its assumptions can provide us with clues about the course of medieval doctrines of justice, and the persistence of its ethos in the present time.
