Abstract

The object of this article is the Emerald Necklace, a landscape project led by Olmsted between 1878 and 1895 for the city of Boston, USA. The intervention is often cited as a precursor to a number of practical and contemporary proposals as the connection of parks and green areas, rehabilitation of watercourses, the creation of green corridors within the urban tissue, multifunctionality and the integration between solutions sanitation, flood control, road, recreation and environmental conservation. However, despite being considered a landscape canon, spend so much time and distortions from environmentalists interpretations become very difficult to identify the true objectives of the project. Through literature review, we tried to identify these objectives, especially as the design handled the complex hydrological base of Boston. Confirms the importance of well-known environmental dimension of the Emerald Necklace, but emerged two other aspects of the intervention that should be more valued: a landscape design with a collective construction and the merger between infrastructure and landscape.
