The Rio Claro archaeological area, a region emcompassing several counties located in the central part of the State of São Paulo, can be singled out as one of the most important in terms of Brazilian archaeology, both for its importance on the issue of the peopling of the Americas, and for the richness of the archaeological record. We here present a brief history of the archaeological research in the area, an overview of the characteristics of the archaeological record, and the main results obtained by the different research teams.Downloads
