The main objective of this article is to present a historical background of the military control (governmental) in the Cananéia/Iguape coastal plain in the first decade of the 19th century, through the archaeological analysis of a symbol of this power, the local fortifications. In order to achieve this objective, the Masters Degree dissertation “Archaeology of the 19th century fortifications at Cananéia/Iguape coastal plain, SP”, as well as questions related to the importance of the appliance of underwater archaeological methodology in the earth/water interface will be reviewed. The appearance of new questions about the maintenance and legitimacy of power in this region in the second half of the 19th century – that point to a new issue to be analysed, the seascapes – is the consequence of this careful approach to the results of the research.Downloads
