Several academic works in both ethnohistory and archaeology point to the Upper São Francisco Basin as an area of domain of the “fearsome Cataguá nation”, which supposedly occupied this territory in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This article aims to show, through a comparative analysis of primary and secondary sources that the existence of such a group is unproven, resulting from the early explorer’s habit of coining generalizing ethnic names to different non-Tupi speaking indigenous groups.Descargas
