Abstract

This article places pedagogical ideas between, on one hand, the ideal of respect for the individual and on the other, social necessities. It analyses John Deweys thinking as being a balancing factor between these potentially opposite tendencies. The contribution made by measurement Psychology and by Sociology to Education are considered as indicators of the tendency to value demands of society over individual liberty.
