Evidence of transformation in Xanthomonas campestris was found established due to the fact DNA from streptomycin and erythromycin strains was able to transfer two genetic markers to sensitive a recipient strain. The cell competence, as established by the growth curve was located toward the end of the lag phase, but early in the exponential phase; the transformation rate of the streptomycin mark was about 2,2 x 10-2 and 2%; for the erythromycin, it was about 2,5 x 10-2 and 12,6%. For double transformants the figures were 1,6 x 10-3 and 3,8 x 10-2. No linkage was found between markers on the same molecule of DNA.
