Abstract

A water extract of Holocalix balansae, Mich., in isotonic solution (3 ml), corresponding to 10 g of plant leaf powder, free from cyanide, was administered subcutaneously to guinea pigs during 30 days. Immediatly after the treatment period, blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture, and treated the method of Zak et al for cholesterol. The results obtained showed marked variations in the blood levels of cholesterol. The authors then conclude that this cyanide free plant extract, can be considered as one of the factors responsible for the photosensibilisation that develops in cattle after Holocalix balansae, Mich., ingestion.
