Abstract

The article examines the absence of the notion of regionalism in Brazilian criticism and literary history in the 19th century. Because, contrary to what is understood, the concept entered our critical circuit as a way of conceiving Brazilian literature only in the 20th century. In this sense, the essay investigates the reasons for this absence, even though there was already a literary production that figured rural / provincial life; but also seeks to signal the threshold moment of its emergence in literary thought.
