Abstract

We analyze the book 1923: os modernistas brasileiros em Paris, highlighting its contributions to understanding the cultural dynamics of Brazilian artists who settled in 1920s Paris. In addition to investigating the transnational exchanges of figures such as Tarsila do Amaral, Oswald de Andrade, Di Cavalcanti, Rego Monteiro, Sérgio Milliet, and Heitor Villa-Lobos, who negotiated their place in international modernism while promoting their Brazilian peers, the book reveals cultural circulations between Brazilian and French artists, addressing themes such as (non)submission to European expectations of “exoticism” and the potential of early Brazilian modernism to influence French artists.
