Abstract

In this article I attempt to discuss the metanarrative mechanism present in Machado de Assis' Memorial de Aires. Such a mechanism makes evident the writing process itself, as well as the narrator's doubts and hesitations, and in so doing it reveals the precariousness of making all stories. I find in Ricardo Piglia's La ciudad ausente the counterpoint for understanding how a machine that tells stories is subtly turned off before the reader's perplexed eyes.
