Afonso Arinos' role, restricted to the topic of the regionalistic fiction, is rehabilitated in this article as primordial in the nationalistic movement of the end of XIXth century and the first decades of the XXth century. The motivation that he gave to two writers from different generations - the contemporary Olavo Bilac and the young Mário de Andrade, in the beginning of his career - enables us to show that the divisions of literary history not always give account of continuities and ruptures.Downloads
